About the Recipe

This recipe was passed on to my family from a close friend of my Mother's. She was from Scotland and loved to bake and we all treasure the recipes that she shared with us while living close as a neighbor. It's a large family size recipe so feel free to cut it down for a smaller batch.

Ingredients

  • Doughnuts

    • 4C flour

    • 4 tsp baking powder

    • 1/4 C butter or margarine

    • 3/4 C white sugar

    • 2 eggs

    • 1/2 C milk

    • 1/2 C orange juice

    • 1/2 tsp salt

    • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

    • 8 C Icing Sugar

    • 4 tsp orange zest

    • 2/3 C orange juice

Preparation

Method

In a mixer combine butter/margarine, sugar and eggs until fluffy.

Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

Combine the rest of the liquid ingredients together.

Alternately add the dry and liquid ingredients until dough forms.

Roll each into a 12-in. rope.

Fold each rope in half lengthwise and twist several times.

Pinch ends to seal.

In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat oil to 375°.

Fry twists, in batches, until golden brown, about 1 minute on each side.

Drain on paper towels.

In a small bowl, combine glaze ingredients;

dip warm doughnuts into the glaze, completely coating them on all sides.

Drain on rack.

*extras freeze well!
